Paediatric General Surgery

Pediatric surgery is a sub speciality of general surgery pertaining to patients ranging from new-borns to 16 years of age. It comes with its own challenges that differentiate it from other surgeries. Whether it is the small size of babies and children to be operated or dealing with their responses to illness or surgery, every aspect of Pediatric Surgery needs special attention.

It deals with a number of problems which are different from the adult population and also their management requires different solution than the adult population.

It has mainly two components namely

(A) Paediatric Emergency Surgery

Which includes a number of surgical procedures like:-

  • Appendicitis
  • Obstructed inguinal hernia
  • Torsion testis
  • Minor procedures like repair of lacerations, drainage of abscesses under sedation
Interesting Case

10 year old boy had complaints of severe pain in scrotum for 2 days. He also had a lot swelling and redness in the scrotum. He was taken up for emergency surgery and was found to have torsion of the testis (ie the testes twists over its blood supply) and the testis had become dead and so was removed. These symptoms in this particular age group should be brought in early to save the testis.

(B) Paediatric elective day care surgeries

Which include a number of procedures like:-

  • Inguinal hernia
  • Undescended testis
  • Hydrocoele
